Following her departure from the Panthers she stopped going to high school, after having studied for a year at Calumet High School. She began to perform in small groups around the Chicago area first performing with Cash McCall's group Lyfe which included her then-boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka Khan and Hassan were married in the year 1970.
